| Billiard / Crosby
| |
The Billiard is the single most popular style of pipe today. The bowl and the tobacco chamber are cylindrical and the shank is about the same length as the height of the bowl.
The Billiard pipes are made by nearly every pipe maker in every conceivable variation. A Billiard with a tall bowl is a Stacked Billiard or Chimney. One with a short bowl is a Pot. A long-shanked Billiard is a Canadian. A short shank and stem make it a Stubby. A Billiard with flat sides on the bowl is a Panelled Billiard and a Panelled Billiard with a square shank is a Foursquare. A full Bent Billiard is a Hungarian or Oom Paul.
Another variety of a Billiard is the Crosby, which features a round, thin and long shank, a long thin tapered stem, and is always straight. This was the preferred shape by singer/actor Bing Crosby, hence its name.
