| Cutty
| |
The Cutty style is a holdover from the old clay pipes of the 16th and 17th centuries. It has a very canted tulip shaped bowl and a slightly bent stem with a tapered bit. The ornamental spur, a small bit of material extending from beneath the bowl, is traditional but optional these days. It's original purpose was to strengthen the heel, or base of the bowl.
Similar shapes include the Zulu, Woodstock, Yachtsman, Prince and Churchwarden. Cutty pipes are available in briar, meerschaum and clay.
