Now we come to a category where I have to describe the indescribable. Nearly all of the styles shown here have certain specific characteristics that distinguish them, that define the style. The Freehand pipe is, by definition, not among these. The pipemaker, instead of forcing the briar into a predetermined pattern, allows the wood to determine the pattern. This produces pipes that are a combination of the skill of the carver and the will of the wood.
The Freehand pipes are like the proverbial snowflakes, each one is different, unique; an expression of craftsmanship, artistry and the natural qualities of the wood.

Notes
-
Freehand pipes can be straight, but are usually bent. The bowl and shank may be of any shape.
-
Freehand pipes often are fitted with a military style stem.
-
The rough plateaux come from the outside of the root bole and are often left on the finished pipe.
-
An ebauchon, or block of briar, with the tobacco chamber and airhole drilled, ready to carve. What masterpiece may lurk within?
